A Tribute to Women in Modernista Music

The 2025 Modernista Fair aims to highlight the role of women in music during the modernista period. Until then, women were mostly limited to playing instruments, usually the piano, in private settings. From that point on, however, more and more women began to take centre stage in both national and international music scenes.

Conxita Badia, a favourite student and performer of Enric Granados, Pau Casals and Manuel de Falla, became a muse for the great poets and composers of her time, who dedicated works to her and entrusted her with their premieres.
Maria Lluïsa Ponsa, in addition to being a great performer, founded the Barcelona Musical Institute, where she taught music free of charge to children in need. She also collaborated with the magazines Feminal and Catalana, which advocated for women’s rights, and as a writer, won several awards at the Floral Games.
