Did \u201cModernista\u201d music exist?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

At first glance, Modernisme is a period characterized by a great number of musical references in all the arts. However, Modernista music itself is difficult to define. Xos\u00e9 Avi\u00f1oa, the leading author on the subject, even writes: \u201cWe now face the central question of our work: can the existence of Catalan Modernista music be decisively affirmed?\u201d (1).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The well-known musicologist Roger Alier also raised, from the outset, the need to clarify whether Modernisme \u201chad its own music, identifiable as such, or whether the best we can do is speak of \u2018music in the time of Modernisme,\u2019\u201d or in other words, is Modernisme \u201ca concept that is almost more historical than musical\u201d? (2).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Style or era, a period of splendor<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Without delving into scholarly debate, what we can affirm is that, thanks to the protagonists of this style or era, Catalonia experienced a great musical splendor, which coincides with the awakening of Catalonia\u2019s sense of identity.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Indeed, in 1888, the year of the Universal Exposition, Barcelona opened up to the world. Even so, the musical atmosphere of Barcelonans at the time \u201cwas not \u2013 in Avi\u00f1ona\u2019s words \u2013 by any means what could be called solid and mature\u201d (3). However, around 1910, the situation had changed substantially. Instead of a \u201cprovincial\u201d city, it had become an \u201cinternational\u201d center (4). It was the time of the emergence of influential associations and entities such as the Orfe\u00f3 Catal\u00e0, promoter of the Palau de la M\u00fasica Catalana, as well as a multitude of musical associations throughout Catalonia, the Balearic Islands, and Valencia (5).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Logically, none of this would have been possible without a host of leading musicians: Alb\u00e9niz, Enric Granados, Pau Casals, Amadeu Vives, Enric Morera, Antoni Nicolau, Juli Garreta, Josep Clav\u00e9, Llu\u00eds Millet, Felip Pedrell, etc. Musicians, and as we said at the beginning, also women like Conxita Badia and Maria Llu\u00efsa Ponsa. A list that continues with Narcisa Freixas, Carmen Karr, Mar\u00eda Barrientos, Margarida Ofila, or Paquita Madriguera.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Thanks to them \u2013 and to her \u2013 we can answer the initial question: did Modernista music exist? We\u2019ll do that next Friday.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
